The three best things about being a florist

I am here to tell you the three best things about being a florist. Now if you tuned in a few weeks ago, you may have seen my post What you really should know before becoming a florist. I left the post on a bit of a downer, so I needed to balance out those negative vibes and tell you my favourite things about being a florist. I’m guessing that you are considering becoming a florist! I am here to tell you the three best things about being a florist. Now if you tuned in a few weeks ago, you may have seen my post What you really should know before becoming a florist. I left the post on a bit of a downer, so I needed to balance out those negative vibes and tell you my favourite things about being a florist. So let’s get started!

My number one best thing about being a florist is … no two days are EVER the same.

Maybe this is something you’ve already considered, but it was something I never even thought of until someone asked me “what do you do all day” and the answers just kept rolling out of my mouth. In truth there are no two days the same in the floral world. You never know what’s going to come through the door, which client may call you, and what unusual opportunities may rear their head. Infact just today, I was having a relatively calm day, sorting through all the wedding inventory when I get an email about producing flowers for a gallery opening in Belgium. See what I mean about not knowing what may come your way?!

I did not value how much I love the fact that every ay can be completely different, until I met with an old friend, who was still working for the same big fashion brand I left 10 years ago. They had made it impossible for her to leave, but in turn she said her days were boring, predictable and tedious. I honestly didn’t know what to say! In truth my days are unpredictable, challenging and as far from boring as you could possibly get.

Variety is the spice of life as they say (where did that saying come from anyway?!) and floristry is VERY varied.

Number two – you get to work with pretty things.

Yes, you betcha, you get to work with pretty things! Flowers are just so goddamn pretty! I mean how can you not resist buckets and buckets of peony in June, armfuls of hydrangea in August and swathes of greenery in December. It is, hands down, the prettiest career ever. And on top of that you get to be creative with all this pretty, from arranging in vases, to making custom bouquets for customers. If you have a store front, perhaps you will be charged with creating window displays or tasked with arranging wedding flowers. Now lets not guild over the fact that there is A LOT of hard work that goes into floristry, but chances are you’ll get to get your hands on the pretty every single day that you work. Believe me when I say it makes your heart absolutely sing!

Number three – you are involved in all sorts of special occasions.

This is probably the most rewarding part of my job as a florist. I get to be involved in people’s special days. I’m not just talking about weddings, but all the little moments in life that people drop by in our store to grab some flowers to celebrate with. It could be a new Grandmother who is celebrating the birth of her Grandson and wants to pick a bouquet to take to the hospital, or a gentleman about to propose to his girlfriend. They all come into our store and share their stories, and life events with me. It is always a total privilege to be part of their moments, even in the smallest of floral ways!

So I really hope I’ve balanced out those negative vibes I mentioned about at the start. Floristry is one big, amazing roller coaster and honestly, if you’re considering it as a career, tune in over the next few weeks and read my post about how to become a florist.
