Create a Stunning Late Summer Flower Arrangement

Create a Stunning Late Summer Flower Arrangement

As the late summer season fills our gardens with rich colors and textures, it’s the perfect time to bring that beauty indoors with a fresh late summer flower arrangement. In my latest video, I’ll show you how to create a stunning centerpiece using seasonal flowers from our cutting patch and other local growers. Whether you’re new to floral design or looking to refine your skills, this step-by-step tutorial will help you craft a professional-quality arrangement that’s sure to impress.

Choosing Your Flowers:

The key to a beautiful arrangement is selecting the right flowers. For a late summer bouquet, consider using blooms that are at their peak during this season. Some of my favorites include dahlias, zinnias, and sunflowers, which add vibrant color and texture to any display.

When choosing your flowers, aim for a mix of focal flowers, filler flowers, and greenery. This combination will create depth and interest in your arrangement. For example, pair bold dahlias with the delicate petals of cosmos, and add a touch of greenery like eucalyptus for a natural, balanced look.

Preparing Your Materials:

Before you start arranging, gather all the necessary materials. For this project, you’ll need:

  • A selection of seasonal flowers
  • A low ceramic bowl
  • Floral scissors or shears
  • Floral tape or chicken wire to create a grid for support

Ensure that all your flowers are properly conditioned by trimming the stems at an angle and placing them in water for a few hours before arranging. This helps to prolong their freshness.

Arranging the Flowers:

  1. Create a Base: Start by creating a grid with floral tape or using chicken wire in your low ceramic bowl. This will give you a solid structure to build upon and keep your flowers in place.
  2. Begin with Greenery: Place your greenery first, spreading it out evenly to create a base layer that will support your flowers. This also helps to define the shape and size of your arrangement.
  3. Add Focal Flowers: Next, add your focal flowers, like dahlias or sunflowers. Position them in the center or slightly off-center, depending on the look you want to achieve.
  4. Fill in with Smaller Blooms: Fill in any gaps with smaller flowers and filler blooms. Play with different heights and angles to create a natural, garden-like feel.
  5. Final Touches: Once you’re satisfied with the arrangement, step back and view it from different angles. Make any final adjustments to ensure a balanced and cohesive design.
